LIVING FOR MY SAVIOR AND COMING KING

Guest Contributor: Carmen Gasilao PhD

Today, in many churches worldwide, Palm Sunday is celebrated signifying the beginning of the Holy Week – where we remember the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This is the confession of our faith – the very core of our belief that Jesus Christ suffered, died and was buried and on the third day He rose again from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-6)

It is my prayer that as we look into today’s passage we would not only be reminded but we would take to heart our commitment to live daily for God.

Our text is found in 1 Peter 4:1-11, and we will divide it into two sections.

A. The first coming of Jesus gives us the true perspective or outlook on life (vv1-6)

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4 They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

1. Jesus’ lifestyle was entirely different from the ways of the world.
• Jesus’ attitude was a readiness to obey the Father no matter what
• Jesus submitted his will to the Father’s will a hundred percent

2. Arm (prepare) yourself with the same attitude (v1)
• Our mind must be ready to face persecution and trial and even death when
needed with the same determination which the Lord Jesus had.
• Part of our suffering will come from rejecting a pagan lifestyle.

3. Living for Christ will bring its own reward but we’ll have to wait to fully see it
When we face God, the judgments of this life will be reversed.

B. The second coming of Jesus continues to guide our thoughts and actions (vv7-11)

“The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen” (I Peter 4:7-11).

1. Keep your emotions under control so you can pray (v7)
• “If we live without prayer, we will die without hope.” C.S. Lewis
• Start praying early in the day—before the pressures of the day overwhelms.

2. Be quick to forgive the wrong things done to you (v8)
• Churches can survive very long when the members decide that love will
cover a multitude of sins.
• Sin is everywhere, we are not yet perfect so love must stretch out to cover sin. Without “stretched-out” love, we will never be able to live together.

3. Stop complaining and start sharing what God has given you (v9)
• Biblically, your home is given to you for two primary reasons: First, as a shelter for your family and second, as a tool for ministry.
• Your home is your single best tool for evangelism and Christian ministry.

4. Use your God-given gifts to bless others (vv10-11)
• When we stand before the Lord someday, he is going to ask you, “What did
you do with what I gave you?” You will have to give an account of your own stewardship (not of another).
• God gives the gift and then God gives the strength. All we do is take the gift God has given us and in his strength, we use it to serve others. This is the whole secret of the Christian life.
• What is the result? Verse 11, “So that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”

Please, Tell The Truth # 2 Consumed By The Truth

Jesus said (John 14: 12) ‘I tell you the truth’

As followers of Jesus we too must tell the truth

But, I can truthfully say, that after 30 years of pastoral ministry, we Christians often struggle to tell the truth

To tell the truth we need a firm foundation of truth in our lives

2 Timothy 2: 19 ‘God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone’

So, what is a firm foundation of truth?

To answer that question we need ONLY to look to Jesus Who is the perfection of truth – the ultimate example of truth

1/ Jesus is truth in the flesh

John 1: 1 ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God’

John 1: 14 ‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth’.

John 14: 6 ‘Jesus said…, “I am…the truth…”

2/ Jesus lived the truth

1 John 2: 8 ‘Jesus lived the truth’

3/ Jesus spoke only the truth

John 14: 12 ‘I tell you the truth’

So, we can say this…

A firm foundation of truth in our lives is a deep resource of truth within us, a resource of truth that grows to consume us so that we become truth in the flesh – we truly become like Jesus!

Here’s how we can deepen that resource of truth within us

1/ Love and accept the truth of God’s word

2 Thessalonians 2: 10-12 10 ‘He (the devil) will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. 11 So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies. 12 Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth’.

John 8: 32 ‘And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free’

(Saved you from the slavery of sin)

2/ Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth

John 14: 17 ‘He is the Holy Spirit, Who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it isn’t looking for Him and doesn’t recognize Him. But you know Him, because He lives with you now and later will be in you’.

John 16: 13 ‘When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future’ (Including your future)
3/ Read your Bible every day and bring your Bible to Church

2 Timothy 3: 15-17 ‘Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another — showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way.

In this series of messages we are talking about telling the truth

Telling the truth is the result of deepening the resource of truth within us

Ephesians 4: 21 (we have) ‘learned the truth that comes from Him’

Ephesians 4: 25 ‘stop telling lies, let us tell our neighbors the truth’

Is there a firm foundation of truth in your life?

Please, Tell The Truth – Is There A Firm Foundation Of Truth In Your Life?

# 1 Jesus said (John 14: 12) ‘I tell you the truth’

We live in a World that rejects Christ and rejects the truth

It all began when Adam and Eve rejected the Lord and rejected the truth and in so doing plunged the World into deception and death

Genesis 3: 1-6

V1 ‘Did God really say’ – the devil castes doubt upon God’s Word

V3 ‘God said’ – Eve fully understood what God said

V4 ‘You won’t die’ – the devil said that God is a liar

V6 ‘The woman was convinced’ – Eve believed the devil and rejected the Lord and the truth

Genesis 3: 13 ‘the serpent deceived me’

In 2018 the devil is continuing to deceive the World and the World is still rejecting the Lord and the truth…

…the only truth that can save them

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 10 He (the devil) will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. 11 So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies. 12 Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth’

The devil’s deception is mainly promoted through ‘fake’ science and ‘fake’ education

Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for real science and real education

But, when science and education go beyond empirical evidence – evidence which can be observed or measured, it becomes a lie, a deception, it becomes ‘fake’ science and ‘fake’ education

And, of course, the media are all too happy to ‘sell’ fake science and fake education as truth

One illustration only: late last year the media reported that ‘scientists’ claimed that they recorded the sound of two stars that collided millions of years ago out there in the Universe somewhere

So, how, did they record this collision?

(I’m not making this up) They ‘built a laser machine’

Now, consider this, in 2000, NASA sent a weather satellite into the Earth’s orbit

In 2005 NASA lost the signal from that satellite

13 years later, on January 20th of this year, an amateur astronomer in Canada located the signal of that lost satellite

So, if ‘science’ can lose a satellite in Earth’s orbit, what makes you think they can detect a collision of two stars out there in the Universe somewhere that happened millions of years ago?

This is what is called ‘fake’ science and ‘fake’ education and sadly millions of people believe it’s true!

As Christians we must constantly be on guard against lies and deception

If we don’t – we will lose our faith in God

2 Timothy 2: 15-18

2 Timothy 2:19 ‘But God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone’

Do you have a foundation stone of truth in your life?

Jesus said (John 14: 12) ‘I tell you the truth’

Illustration: Let me tell you about the most valuable Book in my personal Library

Gospel on Mark printed in Hankou (Wuhan) China in 1910

The Gospel on Mark records the Life and ministry of Jesus and what He said

The people who owned this Bible loved the truth and valued it so highly that it is still here today after surviving through 100 years of great change in China…

…invasion, revolution, cultural and economic development

Let me explain:

In the late 1800’s/early 1900’s parts of China were being invaded and colonized by Great Britain, France, Russia and Japan

In 1908, at the age of 2 years, Aisin Gioro Pu Yi became the last Emperor of China

(In 1910 this Gospel of Mark was printed in China)

In 1911, through revolution under the leadership of Dr. Sun-Yat Sen China became a Republic

In 1912, at the age of 6, Pu Yi was forced to abdicate, bringing to an end 4, 000 years of China being an Empire

In 1926 General Chiang Kai-Shek led the National Revolutionary Army against powerful warlords ruling parts of China

In 1949 Mao Tse Dong declared the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and later in 1966 led the Cultural Revolution which included the abolition of the Christian Church

In 1976 Chairman Mao died, and in the 42 years since his death, China has become the 2nd most developed nation in the World after the U.S

Wow! How did this little Bible survive these last 108 years?

The reason it survived is because its owners loved the truth of the Word of God

God willing this little Bible will survive for another 108 years!

Today, there are more than 130, 000, 000 Christians in China who love the truth of God’s Word

Today, more Bibles are printed in China (Nanjing) than any other Country in the World

Jesus said (John 14: 12) ‘I tell you the truth’

Is there a foundation stone of truth in your life?
