Passing Through The Valley Of Baca

Psalm 84

Psalm 84: 5-8 (NLT)
What joy for those whose strength comes from the Lord, who have set their minds on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
6 When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of refreshing springs. The autumn rains will clothe it with blessings.
7 They will continue to grow stronger, and each of them will appear before God in Jerusalem.

B Psalm 84: 5-8 (NIV)
Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

And if you take a closer look, there is a Valley of Weeping. Have you ever wept? Weeping is more than crying. It is a signifies loneliness, depression, hardship and no one wants to go through a place of sadness. But if you read these verses, you’ll see that these men go from strength to strength.

3 main points when passing through the Valley:

You draw your strength from the Lord.
Psalm 121: 1-3
I look up to the mountains—   does my help come from there? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! 3 He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.

Example:
Story of Moses. He wrote the very first song in the Bible on Exodus 15 – which is a song of deliverance – the very first thing Moses said was “the Lord is my strength”
When David was rescued from the hands of Saul and from the enemies – he wrote 2 Samuel 22 – and he said that the Lord is his strength.
Paul when he asked God to get the thing that torments him or the thorn of his flesh – he said in 2 Corinthians 12:9 – that God’s grace is sufficient – God’s power works best in weakness – or God’s strength works in weakness.

Remember, it’s not your strength – or any other strength. But it’s the STRENGTH of the Lord.
His strength means = power!

Hebrews 10:23-25
23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
This teaches that as people of God – we should not stop meeting together as a church- why? Because thru this meeting – we are encouraged with one another.

Matthew 18:20 – “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

Set on a pilgrimage. Move forward. Don’t get stuck on the valley

Walking thru the valley can sometimes be tiring and exhausting. But take heart, that is not the end point. We live temporary here on earth – and that’s the good news. We are only passing thru earth and our destination is in heaven.

Revelations 21:3-4 – In the vision of John – it says –
3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.[a] 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

Philippians 3:13-14
13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,[a] but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Do not stay on the past. Forget what lies behind and set your eyes to the prize.

Dig a spring.

Verse 6 – When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of refreshing springs

In the Bible – water can be symbolized as the Holy Spirit

John 7: 37-39
37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”[a] 39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given,[b] because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

Isaiah 44:3
For I will pour out water to quench your thirst and to irrigate your parched fields.
And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children.

John 4:14
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

What does this mean? That the Holy Spirit can bring you life – when you feel dry.
Your valley experience can be a time of refreshing spring thru the power of the Holy Spirit. You undergo testing and trials with pure joy in your heart – knowing that the Holy Spirit will give you life.

Are We A Good Church Or A Bad Church? # 5

Ephesians 3:21 ‘to God be the glory in the church and in Jesus Christ for all time, forever and ever! Amen’ (GNT)

Last time we said that a CHURCH THAT GLORIFIES GOD IS A GOOD CHURCH

And a good Church glorifies God through its 1/ worship and its 2/ discipleship

Today we continue

3/ Glorifying God through our evangelism

When we think about evangelism, we think about the Great Commission that Jesus gave the first Disciples

Matthew 28: 18-20 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The first Disciples were quick to obey Jesus command and were so bold in their evangelism that the Church grew quickly and expanded through the middle east and into Europe

Their evangelism was accepted and welcomed by some but also rejected and opposed by others

The opponents of the Gospel in Jerusalem tried to stop the first Disciples, but they failed

Acts 5:28 “We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about Him (Jesus), and you want to make us responsible for his death!”

The opponents of the Gospel in Europe tried to stop the first Disciples, but they failed too

Acts 17: 6 “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too”

When we become like the first Disciples and obey the Great Commission Jesus gave us, people WILL get saved and discipled – AND God will be glorified!

Ephesians 1: 14b ‘He has purchased us to be His own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify Him’

Example: God was glorified in Paul’s salvation – Paul became the great Apostle!

Galatians 1: 23b-24 ‘people were saying, “The one who used to persecute us is now preaching the very faith he tried to destroy!” And they glorified God because of me’

One of the new paraphrase Bible Versions says…‘because of the transformation that took place in my life, they glorified God because of me’

I like that

When we are obedient to the Great Commission, evangelize the lost by preaching salvation in Jesus and people get saved – they are transformed for the glory of God!

Jesus said in Matthew 5: 16 ‘Let your light shine before people…so that they will glorify your Father in Heaven’

In the beginning, God created Adam and Eve perfect, they were filled with life and God’s light

But when they sinned against God that light went out and they eventually died

That’s what Romans 3: 23 means ‘All of us have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory’

When we evangelize the lost, and people are born again, the life and light of God is re-created in them and they are transformed – and that is what glorifies God!

2 Corinthians 3: 18 ‘We all show the Lord’s glory, and we are being changed to be like Him. This change in us brings more and more glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit’.

In 2019 let’s re-commit ourselves to glorifying God through evangelism!

2 Corinthians 4:15b ‘And as God’s grace reaches more and more people, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory’

Final Example: The Apostle Paul and Barnabas evangelizing in Antioch Pisidian – Map

Acts 13: 44-49
48a (RSV) ‘they were glad and glorified the Word of God’

Please note: When you are obedient to the Great Commission and evangelize the lost – people WILL get saved
48b ‘all who were chosen for eternal life became believers’

Compare: Romans 8: 30, 33 1 Thessalonians 1: 4 2 Timothy 2: 10 Titus 1: 1
1 Peter 1: 1, 2: 9 2 Peter 1: 10 Revelation 17: 14

In closing: Dear friends, please remember this A GOOD CHURCH GLORIFIES GOD BUT A BAD CHURCH DOES NOT

LETS CLOSE IN PRAYER
Psalm 72:18-19 18 ‘Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does such wonderful things. 19 Praise his glorious Name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen’!

Are We A Good Church Or A Bad Church? # 4

Ephesians 3:21 ‘to God be the glory in the church and in Jesus Christ for all time, forever and ever! Amen’ (GNT)

Last time we said that a CHURCH THAT GLORIFIES GOD IS A GOOD CHURCH

And a good Church glorifies God through its worship

Today we continue

2/ Glorifying God through our discipleship

How many people here would say that you are a ‘Christian’?

Did you know that the word ‘Christian’ is only used 3 times in the New Testament?

I think that the standards for being a ‘Christian’ are very low; most people in New Zealand would consider that they are a ‘Christian’ because they go to Church a few times in their lifetime

In my opinion, the word ‘Christian’ has just about lost all its true meaning today

It’s easy to call yourself a ‘Christian’, anyone can do that

But, can you call yourself a ‘disciple’ of Jesus?

How many people here would say that you are a ‘disciple’?

Did you know that the word ‘disciple’ is used over 300 times in the New Testament?

When Jesus gave His last command to the Church, He said in Matthew 28: 19 ‘go and make disciples of all the nations’

He did not say ‘go and make Christians of all the nations’

In my opinion the meaning of the word ‘disciple’ truly glorifies God!

Ok, so what is a ‘disciple’ and how is it different from the misused word ‘Christian’?

A ‘disciple’ is a person who believes in Jesus, follows Jesus, learns from Jesus and obeys Jesus

Jesus said our discipleship glorifies God!

John 15:8 ‘Your abundant growth and your faithfulness as My followers will bring glory to the Father’

Here are a few comments about discipleship…

1/ When the Lord calls us to follow Him, He does not ask our permission
“Is it OK if you follow Me”?

Example: Acts 9: 3-6
6 ‘Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.’

2/ When the Lord calls us to follow Him, He does not ask if it is convenient
“Is now a good time to follow Me”?

Example: Luke 9: 57-62
59b ‘first let me’ 61 ‘first let me’

3/ Jesus is looking for disciples who will never turn back from following Him
John 6: 66-69

4/ A true disciple gives up EVERYTHING to follow Jesus!
Mark 10: 28 ‘we’ve given up EVERTHING to follow You’

Finally, do you believe in Jesus, follow Jesus, learn from Jesus and obey Jesus?

This is what it means to glorify God through our discipleship

Romans 1:5 ‘Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey Him, bringing glory to His Name’.
