The Gospel Of John # 20 Jesus saves a woman caught in adultery

John 7: 53 – 8: 11

This narrative about Jesus saving a woman caught in adultery is a little bit controversial – let me explain

In your Bible Version, just before this passage, there may be a note that says, ‘the most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7: 53 – 8: 11’

Why does it say that?

Because there is no original copy of the Gospel of John in existence – and the earliest and most reliable copies of the Gospel of John do not include this narrative of Jesus saving a woman caught in adultery

So, why is this narrative included here, in the Gospel of John?

Because Bible scholars believe that this event, Jesus saving a woman caught in adultery, DID happen

It just that it wasn’t recorded by John, but by someone else

John 21:25 ‘Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written’.

OK, so what can we learn from this passage

John 7: 53-8: 6a

The Jewish religious leaders brought a woman to Jesus who they claimed was caught in the act of adultery

They brought her to Jesus hoping that He would say something that they could use to discredit Him

So, if Jesus did not condemn her, the J.R.L would accuse Jesus of violating Old Testament law that required her to be executed for adultery Leviticus 20: 10

But, if Jesus did condemn her, the J.R.L would accuse Jesus of violating the ‘Law of Love’, how would condemning this woman demonstrate the love of God?

John 1:16-17 ‘From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ’.

This is a dilemma!

John 8: 6b

As Jesus got down and ‘wrote in the dust’ it gives a few moments to think about our own lives

What if it was you that was caught in the act of adultery, or any other sin?

What would that do your relationship with God, and what would it do to your reputation as a Christian?

Your relationship with God can be restored, but your reputation will be damaged forever

The devil will never forget it and some people, like these J.R.L will use it to condemn you and discredit the people who will try to defend you

So, how does Jesus deal with sin?

1/Look how Jesus deals with the sin of the J.R.L
John 8: 7-9

They persisted in demanding an answer from Jesus, and finally Jesus answers them by saying ‘Let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone’

9 Isn’t it interesting, they all left!

By walking away, they silently admitted that they were full of sin too

And, you will notice that none of them stayed and confessed their sin, none of them fell at Jesus feet and asked Him for forgiveness – they preferred sin to salvation!

2/Look how Jesus deals with the woman caught in the act of adultery
John 8: 10-11

Jesus said to her, ‘Did even one of them condemn you…neither do I’

By doing this, He was demonstrating that He was full of ‘unfailing love and faithfulness’
But, what about the requirements of the Old Testament law? – By leaving, the J.R.L withdrew their charge of adultery against her

Jesus though, didn’t ‘let her off’ – He warned her ‘Go and sin no more’

Dear friends, to bring this Message to an end: if you are living in sin and trying to hide it, know this: eventually your sin will become public – and it will be embarrassing

1 Timothy 5: 24 ‘Remember, the sins of some people are obvious, leading them to certain judgment. But there are others whose sins will not be revealed until later’

Your reputation will take a massive ‘hit’ – but, if you repent of your sin, you will experience the fullness of Jesus ‘unfailing love and faithfulness’

The Gospel Of John # 19 the 5th teaching – discussions in the temple about Jesus as Israel’s Messiah

John 7: 1-52

1-9 Jesus is in Galilee and the time is coming for the annual celebration of the Festival of Shelters in Jerusalem; sometimes known as the Feast of Tabernacles

Jesus unbelieving brothers urged Him to go to Jerusalem, but Jesus was hesitant because the Jewish Religious Leaders there wanted to kill Him John 5: 18

The Festival of Shelters was celebrated every year in Jerusalem, in the Autumn (this year: 13th-20th October), and lasted for 7 days

The Festival celebrated 2 things:
1/ God SAVING His people from 430 years of slavery in Egypt
2/ God PROVIDING for His people during their 40-year journey from Egypt to the Promised Land

So, the 2 great themes of the Festival of Shelters were SALVATION and PROVIDENCE

Exodus 17: 1-7
3 saved from Egypt
6 provided with water

Please note: 7 ‘the people…tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord here with us or not?”’
10-13 Later, Jesus does go to Jerusalem and the J.R.L look for Him so that they can arrest Him

14 Mid-way through the week, Jesus went to the temple to teach God’s Word to the people
Graphic: Herod’s temple courtyard

15-24, 28-30 Jesus teaches the people that His authority comes from God and accuses the people of trying to kill Him (19) ‘you are trying to kill Me’

25-27, 31, 40-43, but, some of the people suspected that Jesus could be the Messiah

The word – ‘Messiah’, is a Hebrew word, and means the same as the Greek word ‘Christ’

The 2 words have the same meaning = the One who is anointed/appointed by God to SAVE and PROVIDE for His people John 1: 41, Matthew 1: 21

Jesus had already declared that He WAS the Messiah John 4: 26

32-36, 44-52 the J.R.L try to arrest Jesus

Now, let’s look a little closer: During the Festival of Shelters the J.R.L would re-enact God SAVING and PROVIDING for His people by taking large pots filled with water and pouring the water out, down the Altar that was situated in the temple courtyard

This was a direct reference to God SAVING His people from Egypt and PROVIDING for them during their wilderness journey

Relating directly to this; the great Old Testament Prophet Ezekiel, had a vision of God’s SALVATION and PROVISION for His people pouring out of the Temple in Heaven like water
Ezekiel 47: 12

So now, on the last day of the Festival of Shelters, ‘Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds’ that He was the One sent from God to SAVE and PROVIDE for His people
37-39

Let’s go back to the question that the people of God asked Moses, “Is the Lord here with us or not?”’
Exodus 17: 7

Jesus answered that question in Jerusalem that day! Jesus WAS saying, I am the Messiah, I am God’s SALVATION and PROVISION for His people

Jesus answers that same question today!

Dear friends, as we witness to our friends about Jesus, tell them that Jesus IS God’s SALVATION and PROVIDENCE for them

Some will not believe that, but some will believe it; and they WILL be saved and experience everything that Jesus promised us

GOSPEL OF JOHN #18 the 4th teaching – discussions about Jesus as the Bread of Life

GOSPEL OF JOHN #18 the 4th teaching – discussions about Jesus as the Bread of Life

John 6:22-71

We saw in the previous section, Jesus feeding the 5000+ and we said that this was a sign pointing to something beyond a miracle of compassion for people who were hungry. He was preparing them for a revelation that He was truly the Messiah.

We shall see here many parallel teachings that Jesus had with the woman by the well (John 4).

In our text today we have a dialogue between Jesus and his hearers.

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” (6:21-25)

The feeding occurred on a mountainside above Bethsaida and Jesus was now in Capernaum.

Jesus did not answer their question but immediately said in 26-27
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

Jesus knew exactly why they were looking for Him and so he told them of a different kind of food.

Natural food – perishes (work for our meals 2 Thessalonians 3:12 but this should not our chief concern)

Spiritual food – endures (continues, persists) to eternal life

Parallel to John 4: 13-14
Living water quenching thirst eternally = the bread of life satisfying spiritual hunger forever.

Who gives this food? 27 “Son of Man” the title of Jesus to show his humanity. And the Father is greatly pleased with His Son. (seen in Jesus’ baptism Luke 3:22, transfiguration Matt 17:5)

What the people picked up was the word WORK/LABOR and missed out the word GIVE.

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

The Jews were used to the idea of meritorious works that would bring them favour from God.

All religions can be categorized into two kinds: One that believes you have to work your way to heaven by your good works and one that believes that Jesus has completed the sacrifice once and for all and that through Him, as we submit to His Lordship we are saved.

Galatians 2:16 “know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So, we too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.”

Jesus’ response: Believe in the One He has sent.

BELIEVE means to trust, rely upon, have confidence in, so much so that we OBEY what He says.

Jesus’ response was a straightforward answer but how did the people respond?

30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

Now, did they not just experience a sign? (5000+ people were fed).

They knew the account of Moses and that for 40 years they had manna (Exo 16:35, Nehemiah 9:21) and so the people were really asking for more physical food rather than the “better bread” that gives life to the world.

So, Jesus corrected their wrong thinking: it was NOT MOSES who gave them bread.
The “manna” in the OT is only a type of the “true manna” that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Then the people said “always give us this bread” – like the woman (John 4:15) The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

Jesus’ response is the first of seven “I AM” passages in the Gospel of John and it is the name by which God revealed Himself to Moses. The Self-Existent One – Rev 1:8 “who was and is and who is to come”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.

Jesus is declaring his divinity “I AM.”

To come to Jesus, one must believe. And to believe in Jesus, one has to come.

As we have said earlier, believing is not merely a mental assent, but it means surrender – yielding yourself to Christ and His Lordship. To come to Christ and believe in Him means to receive Him within, just as you receive food and drink.

The following section contains promises for all those who will come to Jesus.

36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.  40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

What wonderful promises contained in these four verses

Whoever comes – he will not drive away (no sin is too big for God not being able to forgive…no traumatic experience he cannot accept….) abortionist, drug lord, sex slave, arsonist, vilest offender who truly believes – that moment from Jesus a pardon receives (considered as though you have not sinned –JUSTIFIED)

40 “looks” (and keeps looking), believes (and keeps believing-obeying) ..I will not lose them…raise them up at the last day (trumpet call)….have eternal life

But look at how the people began to grumble (murmured, complained) because Jesus once again said “For I have come down from heaven”.

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” 43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

At first the Jews were seeking, now they are grumbling (they are known for this Exodus 15:24, 17:3, Numbers 14:2) but they were known for this. They knew Joseph was the legal father of Jesus but Jesus was not his natural son, for he was born of a virgin (Luke 1:34-38).

Jesus emphasized and boldly declared “I came down from heaven” (38, 41, 50, 51, 58)

Let us look for a moment at three verses where Jesus’ says that the process of personal salvation –and how this involves both divine sovereignty and human responsibility.

37 All those the Father gives me will come to me
44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them
65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”

Salvation is primarily God’s initiative and His outworking in our lives.

No one can say – I was seeking for God that is why I found Him. God has been calling people to Himself (45 They will be taught by God) and causes the hearts of men to respond – this is His grace, without reference to anything we may have done. When we come to recognize our need for a Saviour and come to Him in repentance and receive Him as Lord and Saviour – God has been behind the scene making it possible for us to come.

The Father draws the sinner by His Word – the sinner hears, learns and comes as the Father draws him or her to Jesus. This is a mystery -Yes! But a blessed reality!

Does that mean we should no longer preach the Gospel because anyway God will draw people to Himself anyway?

Just as a hyper-Calvinist told William Carey, whose passion was to go to India with the Gospel – “Young man, sit down; when God pleases to convert the heathen, he will do it without your aid or mine.”

Jesus’ last commission was to preach the Gospel and make disciples first in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

Jesus showed the people that what He was giving was something far better than manna because (49) although it lasted for 40 years, the ancestors died in the wilderness but whoever eats this living bread will live forever.
Jesus then refers to this bread as His flesh – His body which was to be crucified for the life of the world.

As the Jews took this literally, they began to argue sharply among themselves.

52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

The consequences of “eating his flesh and drinking his blood” are the same as the promises we saw earlier in 36-40. So “eating his flesh and drinking his blood” is an extreme metaphor of putting one’s faith in Jesus.

All that Jesus was saying was: Just as you take food and drink within your body and it becomes a part of you, so you must receive Me within your innermost being so that I can give you life.

In Jesus’ previous encounter, He used illustrations like being “born again”, which is not to be taken literally. Jesus was emphasizing an essential truth.

This portion has been used by the Catholic church to refer to Communion and that the mystery of transubstantiation takes place– where the elements are converted into the body and blood of Christ at consecration.
This is adding to what the Bible says.

One: this does not refer to the Lord’s supper.
Two: Jesus intentionally used a powerful figurative language to make an unforgettable truth: To believe in Christ means to be totally united to Him by faith and to participate in his life.

This illustration was so vivid, so extreme, in fact, it caused an uproar and many “disciples” left Him and no longer followed Jesus.

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

We see here that Jesus isn’t really after a big crowd who were not sincere
in terms of their faith.

He did not use fancy language to make people laugh or make them like
Him.

Jesus also taught about “taking up your cross, daily and come follow Me” (Luke 9:23) – this was not a literal cross, but a dying to the pride, to self-centeredness “Big I” and following Jesus.

This was a hard saying -not hard to understand, but hard to accept.

Many of the Jews – if not all, were aware of Moses’ teachings and that a Prophet would come (Deuteronomy 18).

John the Baptist had called their attention and thousands had heard John’s cry to repentance. God has been teaching, using His Word. But many refused and turned away.

Even the rich young ruler turned away (Luke 18:18-30)

From more than 5000+, Jesus was only left with the Twelve.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

LESSONS:

The deepest human need is not met by something but by SOMEONE, and that is JESUS!
Eternal life – meaningful life – true life has been provided for by the
TRUE MANNA, the TRUE BREAD OF LIFE.

I need to come to Jesus (with all I am) and believe and surrender to His authority as the Holy One from God and build TRUE LIFE in Him.

When there are “hard sayings” or difficult things He asks me to do, I will choose to FOLLOW JESUS than my own selfish wants.

Then and until now, God is calling people to turn to Him and the Holy Spirit uses His Word to convict men of sin and grant them salvation.

This passage started with the crowd – from seeking to grumbling to quarrelling to deserting Jesus. They had heard, seen and experienced His presence – but instead of humbling themselves– they just went back to their own way of thinking and living, apart from submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. And there was Judas who was with Him along but whose heart was never converted.

Today as you hear the Word of God, do you recognize a spiritual hunger? Have you honestly allowed Jesus Christ into your life both as Saviour and Lord? He has given His very life for your salvation (51).

No one can ever love you more than Jesus.

The Gospel of John # 17 the fifth sign – Jesus walks over the water to His disciples

Guest Contributor:  Zhang Jun Fa

John 6:16-21

Jesus walks over the water to His disciples

The Sea of Galilee is actually a freshwater lake. It is just called ‘sea’ traditionally.
Why Jesus has to ‘walk’ over the ‘sea’?

First, we need to know that ‘sea’ is a picture of sin.

Isaiah 57:20 ‘“But those who still reject me are like the restless sea, which is never still but continually churns up mud and dirt.’

Matthew 8:32 ‘“All right, go!” Jesus commanded them. So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake (the sea) and drowned in the water.’

Matthew 12:43 ‘“When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none.’

Job7:12 ‘Am I a sea monster or a dragon that you must place me under guard?’

Daniel 7:2-3 ‘In my vision that night, I, Daniel, saw a great storm churning the surface of a great sea, with strong winds blowing from every direction. Then four huge beasts came up out of the water, each different from the others.’

Revelation 13:1 ‘Then I saw a beast rising up out of the sea. It had seven heads and ten horns, with ten crowns on its horns. And written on each head were names that blasphemed God.’

The beast out of the sea is a picture of anti-Christ. And the beast out of the earth is a picture of false prophets.

Satan is copying what God is doing. But we shall stand firm, because God’s way is higher. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Proverbs 9:5-6 ‘“Come, eat my food, and drink the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.”’

Proverbs 9:17-18 ‘“Stolen water is refreshing; food eaten in secret tastes the best!” But little do they know that the dead are there. Her guests are in the depths of the grave.’

Drink the living water, don’t drink the sea water. Eat the bread of life, don’t eat the bread of death.

So the world we are living in is just like a sea of sin. Then, what are we like? We are like fish in the sea.

Habakkuk 1:14 ‘Are we only fish to be caught and killed? Are we only sea creatures that have no leader?’

Matthew 4:19 ‘Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”’

Matthew 13:47-48 ‘“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a fishing net that was thrown into the water (the sea) and caught fish of every kind. When the net was full, they dragged it up onto the shore, sat down, and sorted the good fish into crates, but threw the bad ones away.’

And the fish are dragged up onto the shore is a picture of ‘Rapture’.
(1 Thessalonians 4:17)

Now, let us quickly review how God led Israelites out of Egypt and into the promised land.

The Israelites (God’s people) were like slaves in Egypt. Before the Exodus, they ate the Passover lamb (Jesus’s flesh). Then the Israelites came to the Red Sea (sin), so Moses raised his staff (the Cross) and the waters were divided, and they crossed the Red Sea on dry ground (the way to Salvation). Finally, the Israelites entered the promised land (Heaven).

Isaiah 51:10 ‘Was it not You Who dried up the sea, the deep waters, and Who made a path through the deep sea for Your saved people to cross over?’ (NLV)

Dear Friends, we have to enter the narrow door, and Jesus is the ONLY way to Salvation. Amen!

And, finally, we understand why Jesus has to walk over the sea. Not only because Jesus is sinless, but He is also trampling Satan, anti-Christ, false prophets and all sins under His feet!

Genesis 3:15 ‘And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”’

Psalms 74:13 ‘You split the sea by your strength and smashed the heads of the sea monsters.’

16-17 Don’t go before Jesus, pray that God will go before us. (Deuteronomy1:33)

19 The disciples were terrified, because they though Jesus was a ghost.

(Matthew 14:26; Mark 6:49) Be confident with God’s power, not with Devil’s power!

20 “Don’t be afraid. I am here!” Are you afraid?

Genesis 3:10 ‘He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”’

This is the first time in the Bible mentioning about ‘afraid’. Are you afraid? Or are you living under condemnation with fear?

Isaiah 54:4a ‘Fear not; you will no longer live in shame. Don’t be afraid; there is no more disgrace for you.”

Isaiah 54:9-10 ‘“Just as I swore in the time of Noah that I would never again let a flood cover the earth, so now I swear that I will never again be angry and punish you. For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.’

Romans 8:1 ‘So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.’

So Jesus is not like a small little boat that would sink in the roaring sea, He is Noah’s ark! When you are in the ark, you are saved! Even when you fall down, because you don’t fall outside the ark, you fall inside the ark! So don’t be afraid!

21 ‘Immediately they arrived at their destination!’?! How did that happened? Because the disciples’ destination is not anywhere else. The true destination is called ‘Immanuel’. (God is with us)

Revelation 21:1 ‘Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea (sin) was also gone.’

The Gospel of John # 16 the fourth sign – Jesus feeds a crowd of people

Guest Contributor: Carmen Gasilao Ph. D

John 6: 1-15

This is a miracle found in all four Gospels – Luke 9:10-19, Mark 6:30-44 and Matthew 14:13-21, aside from the resurrection of Jesus.

“Monumental miracle” – John MacArthur because of the sheer mass of eyewitness participants – about 15,000-25,000 people!!

We know now, that Jesus was preparing the crowd for a much deeper teaching which we will study next time – to reveal that He is the True Bread of Life!

Let us read the passage: John 6:1-15

Let us look at all the characters in this narrative and learn from them.

The crowd
Kept following miraculous signs (John 6:2)
Sheep without a shepherd (Mark 6:34)
They were getting hungry and were not disappointed (John 6:13)
Misinterpreted Jesus’ kingdom (John 6:15)

People are needy, but more often, we only see the physical needs.
Satan continually deceives man about the inferior things. (Adam, Esau, Jesus)

The Disciples
Philip – we don’t have enough money (John 6:5)
Andrew – what good can this do for such a huge crowd? (John 6:9)
Disciples – send them away (Mark 6:39)

Jesus’ disciples often fail to see the God of the impossible!
We cannot do anything by ourselves but God can still work through us, only if we submit to Him.
We are to love others not with words but with action (1 John 3:17-18)

The young boy
What little he had – he offered to Jesus

“Little becomes much when God is in it”
All that God has entrusted to us should be given back to Him (Matt 24:14-30)

Jesus Christ
Compassion towards the people: he taught them, he healed them and fed them although He knew that eventually these people would choose Barabbas over him and wildly shout “Crucify him” (Matthew 27:16)
As God’s message and messenger, He had to teach His disciples God’s unlimited power, resources and management
Gave thanks and broke the bread (while breaking, it multiplied)
God gives in abundance (filled and with left over – nothing lost)

Jesus’ compassion for the people is more than we can ever imagine.
He is in control and above every situation. (John 6:6)
He creatively makes a way and abundantly supplies. (John 6:12, Phil 4:19)
He still chooses to use even those whose faith falters. (John 6:10-12)
He uses the weak who give their resources to Him. (John 6:9; 2 Cor 8:2)

The purpose of Jesus’ miracles:
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

We can trust Him fully for life now and hereafter!

What attitude pleases God?
Without faith it is impossible to please God! (Hebrews 11:6)
Daily confidence and dependence in His love and provision.
“Give us today our daily bread…” Matthew 6:11
Love God, Love your neighbour (1 John 4:11,12)
